Entry Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements


The application process is managed online via UCAS Teacher Training. Essential minimal entry requirements include: Grade C or above in GCSE English Language and Mathematics; (if applying for a Primary place, GCSE Science Grade C or above is required also). Good quality degree in your chosen subject (awarded by a UK   higher education institution (or recognised equivalent qualification). Completion of Department of Education's Professional Skills’ Tests in Numeracy and Literacy are a core requirement, as is the receipt of a satisfactory disclosure certificate issued by the Disclosure and Barring Service.


Personal Qualities and Suitability for Teaching


We would expect all of our trainees to be creative, enthusiastic and able to work in a team. Trainees must have a passion for their subject, and be committed to delivering this in the classroom. They must possess exceptional organisational skills and have the ability to reflect on practice and a drive to develop as a teacher. Good communication skills are essential. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are able to communicate clearly and accurately in both spoken and written English. Applicants should also demonstrate an experience of and commitment to working with young people.


Additional Interests or Experiences


We are looking for enthusiastic and committed professionals willing and able to take responsibility for their personal professional development.


Experience in school is an essential pre-requisite of the programme. Applicants should be prepared to discuss their insights and reflections at interview. Applicants should also indicate any additional experiences, hobbies or interests appropriate to the role of the teacher.


Experience in Schools


We would usually expect candidates to have had the equivalent of two weeks’ experience in a state secondary school before starting the course, Observing teachers in their chosen subject specialism, and/or taking part in working with pupils and reflecting upon the process of education is all valuable experience.


How we select our Trainees


Admissions Process

Application forms are carefully screened to select applicants for interview. Schools will consider how much recent experience applicants have had in secondary schools. Academic qualifications including predicted grades, personal qualities and suitability for teaching, and additional interests and experiences will also be taken into account when selecting potential trainees. Selected applicants will be invited to attend an interview. Offers of places cannot be made until an interview has taken place. If an applicant cannot attend the specified interview date, an alternative date may be given subject to places remaining available.


Interview Process

If invited to interview, applicants will be asked to complete a range of tasks, including:


  • Formal panel interview presentation
  • Pupil activity
  • Group activity and presentation
  • Literacy test
